Fascinating facts about the Chimpanzee

• A chimpanzee's grip strength is estimated at 1,300 PSI — roughly 15 times stronger than a human's. Their arms are 1.5 times longer than their legs, built for climbing and swinging through canopy 40 metres above the ground. When a chimp pulls a branch toward its body, it's exerting force equivalent to a hydraulic press. This raw power comes from muscle fibre composition: they have proportionally more fast-twitch fibres than we do, the type that fires for explosive movement rather than endurance.
• In 1960, researcher Jane Goodall watched a chimpanzee named David Greybeard strip leaves from a twig and use it to fish termites from a mound — the first recorded instance of tool use in a wild animal. This changed everything: humans were no longer the only species that made tools. Today we know individual chimpanzee groups have different tool-making traditions, teaching techniques from mother to offspring across generations, much like human culture. A young chimp takes 4-5 years to master the skill.
• Chimpanzees spend roughly 4-5 hours of every daylight hour foraging — cracking open nuts with stones and branches, ripping apart termite mounds, and hunting colobus monkeys in coordinated groups. A single adult eats about 2 kilograms of fruit per day, but when fruit is scarce they survive on leaves, bark, and insects. In the Gombe Stream forest, researchers documented hunting parties of up to 15 males cooperating to corner prey, then sharing meat — a behaviour that hinted at social complexity once thought impossible in animals.
• The average chimpanzee lifespan in the wild is 33 years, though in captivity some have reached their 60s. Females reach sexual maturity around 13-14 years old and give birth to a single offspring every 5-6 years, making reproduction slow and energetically expensive. A mother invests years teaching her young everything — where to find food, which plants are safe, how to navigate the social hierarchy of the community. Losing a mother before age 5 is often fatal.
• West African chimpanzees are vanishing: their population has collapsed from an estimated 2 million in 1900 to fewer than 300,000 today. A single chimpanzee occupies a home range of 6-30 square kilometres depending on food availability, which means habitat loss fragments populations into isolated groups too small to sustain genetic diversity. Habitat destruction, poaching, and disease like Ebola have pushed three subspecies to the brink. Conservation efforts in protected reserves have shown populations can stabilise, but only if entire forest corridors — not just island reserves — remain intact.
