• At just over a metre long, the brown-banded bamboo shark tops out at 1.04 metres (41 in), yet it can linger on land for half a day, up to 12 hrs out of water, before needing to return to the sea. This unusual tolerance lets it survive brief tidal stranding events, highlighting its resilience in the shallow reef and tide-pool habitats it calls home.
• When released, six-month-old pups measuring about 10 inches (25 cm) are large enough to survive on their own yet still small enough for hotel-based nurseries to raise. This size balance gives them a realistic chance to integrate into reef ecosystems, where they hunt nocturnally on small fish and shrimp that would otherwise overgraze corals.
• Genomic work in 2018 revealed the shark's DNA spans roughly 4.7 giga base-pairs, a massive genome that evolves unusually slowly. Yet, contrary to earlier beliefs that elasmobranchs lost the HoxC gene cluster, this species retains several Hoxc genes, offering scientists a rare glimpse into ancient vertebrate development.
• In the wild these sharks hide in coral reefs down to 85 metres (279 ft) deep, but in captivity they can live as long as 25 years. Such longevity, combined with their small size, makes them one of the few sharks that thrive in public aquaria.
