Brazilian Teal

Fascinating facts about the Brazilian Teal

• In 1789 Johann Friedrich Gmelin gave the Brazilian teal its first scientific name, Anas brasiliensis, anchoring it in the same genus that held all ducks, swans and geese. Over a century later, German zoologist Hans von Boetticher split it off into the brand-new genus Amazonetta in 1929, making it the sole living member of that line. This taxonomic journey shows how a single species can carry the legacy of two eras of bird classification, reminding us that even common ducks can rewrite scientific history.
• The Brazilian teal's range stretches across eastern South America, from central Brazil all the way to Uruguay, northern and eastern Argentina, Paraguay, central Venezuela, northeastern Peru, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana, eastern Bolivia, and eastern Colombia. Such a spread means the bird thrives in a mosaic of freshwater lakes and rivers far from the coast, each surrounded by dense vegetation.
• Brazilian teals usually gather in pairs or small flocks that never exceed twenty individuals, and both the male and female stay with the hatchlings until they can fend for themselves.
• While adult Brazilian teals snack on a mixed diet of seeds, fruits, roots and insects, their ducklings are fed exclusively insects.
• The International Union for Conservation of Nature rates the Brazilian teal as Least Concern, reflecting its abundant numbers across a vast stretch of South America. Yet the species' reliance on freshwater bodies away from the coast.

About the Brazilian Teal

The Brazilian Teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis) is a strikingly beautiful duck species, characterized by its rich, chestnut-brown plumage accented by vibrant green and blue patches on the wings. Males often display a distinctive white throat and strikingly bright red bill, while females are more subdued in coloration, boasting a mottled brown appearance that offers them excellent camouflage in their lush, Amazonian habitats. These ducks are primarily found in freshwater wetlands, rivers, and lagoons across Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, where they thrive in the dense aquatic vegetation that provides both food and shelter. Their graceful swimming and diving abilities enable them to forage effectively for aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates, making them well-adapted to their diverse environment. Behaviorally, Brazilian Teals are known for their sociable nature, often seen in small groups or pairs, engaging in elaborate courtship displays during the breeding season. One surprising trait of these ducks is their ability to produce a variety of vocalizations that serve as communication signals among flock members, ranging from soft whistles to louder quacks. This intricate social structure allows them to maintain cohesion in their groups, especially in the intricate maze of waterways they inhabit. As they glide gracefully through the shimmering waters of the Amazon, the Brazilian Teal embodies the vibrant pulse of this biodiverse ecosystem, a living testament to the delicate balance of life that thrives within its depths.
