Bocage's Tree Frog

Fascinating facts about the Bocage's Tree Frog

• A male Bocage's tree frog can fit on the tip of your finger – it only grows to about 50 mm (2 in) long, while females reach a modest 58 mm (2.3 in). Despite that tiny size, they spend most of the year hidden underground in burrows, only emerging to call and mate. Their secretive lifestyle makes them easy to miss unless you know where to listen.
• Their backs show dorsal color variation, ranging from bright green to brown, and many have a dark M- or N-shaped blotch that may stretch onto the head.
• When the rains arrive, males announce the breeding grounds with an atonal "waaab" that can echo from the ground or low foliage, sometimes repeating immediately. The frogs then lay their eggs in a shallow hole dug right at the water’s edge, letting the temporary pools provide a safe nursery until the tadpoles hatch.
• Their distribution stretches from Ethiopia in the north down to Namibia and Zambia in the south, covering at least eleven countries and possibly more. This broad range, spanning wet and dry savannahs, shows how adaptable the species is to different African landscapes.
• Because they thrive in both natural grasslands and areas disturbed by humans, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists Bocage's tree frog as "least concern" – a reminder that some wildlife can flourish even as the world changes around them.
