• A female tropical fritillary lays eggs on violet plants — and the caterpillar that hatches doesn't eat the leaf it sits on. Instead, it waits for siblings to hatch nearby, then turns cannibal, devouring them before the plant provides a single meal. This fratricide happens in the first 48 hours of life. Only the survivor gets to feed.
• The wings of a tropical fritillary are covered in scales so fine they work like a microscopic prism — each one bent to catch light at a specific angle. This isn't pigment: the orange-red colour is pure physics. Tilt the wing 30 degrees and the colour vanishes. Scientists are studying this structural colour to design paints that won't fade under African sun.
• Male tropical fritillaries patrol savanna grassland at dawn, flying a fixed 10-metre-wide circuit for hours at a time — the same path, every 20 minutes, day after day. A bird that eats one fritillary learns instantly never to touch another. One butterfly can train an entire flock of predators to avoid its species for life.
• In sub-Saharan savannas, the emergence of tropical fritillaries lags rainfall by exactly 3–4 weeks — caterpillars only pupate when soil moisture drops to a precise level. Climate change has begun unplugging this timing: earlier rains now trigger emergence before violet plants flower, leaving newly hatched caterpillars with nothing to eat. The species has no backup plan.
