Fascinating facts about the Echo Azure

• In 2001, Guppy and Shepard nominated C. echo to the species level, lifting it from its former status as a subspecies of C. ladon (Cramer, 1780). Earlier, some scientists like Layberry et al. once recognized C. echo as a subspecies of C.ladon in western Canada. Today, many scientists agree that C.echo is a distinguished species.
• C. echo's adult wings flash a pale blue-grey with small black spots or dashes, a subtle palette that blends into woodland light. Its larvae hatch on flower buds of host plants and are attended and protected by ants, which harvest sugar-rich honeydew the caterpillars excrete throughout their life. After feeding, the caterpillars may even pupate inside ant nests.
• The echo azure's caterpillars munch on a menu of woody plants: Ceanothus (California wild lilac), Spiraea (Holodiscus), Aesculus (California buckeye), Rubus (blackberries), and several legumes. Adult butterflies sip nectar from the same plants plus Heteromeles (toyon) and Rhamnus, weaving a tight ecological web across shrublands and woodlands.
• Echo azures are spotted in woodlands, shrublands, and near mountain streams where their host plants grow, ranging from California to Montana. Depending on moisture and plant condition, they may produce 1-2 broods from early spring to fall, with flight periods recorded from February through late June, sometimes extending into July or even October when winters are mild.
• Five subspecies of the echo azure pepper the western United States, each named by early lepidopterists: C. echo cinerea (W. H. Edwards, 1883), the Southwestern azure; C. echo echo (W. H. Edwards, 1864), the Pacific azure; C. echo nigrescens (J. Fletcher, 1903), the Northwestern azure; C. echo sidara (Clench, 1944), the Rocky Mountain azure; and C. echo gozora (Boisduval, 1870), the Mexican Azure.
