• A black-tailed marmoset weighs less than a chocolate bar — around 100 to 140 grams — yet hunts insects the size of its own head with the precision of a surgeon. They spot prey moving through leaves from 10 metres away and leap onto branches with enough force to snatch a grasshopper mid-flight. That accuracy matters: insects make up 70% of their diet, and a single marmoset can catch 600 insects in a single day.
• These marmosets live in tight family units of 3 to 15 animals where only one female breeds — a social structure borrowed from ants and bees, not from other primates. The breeding female produces twins almost every time, and the males in the group carry the babies, handing them back to the mother only to feed. If another female tries to breed, the dominant female will suppress her hormones just by being nearby, a chemical veto that works without violence.
