• Black herons turn their wings into a living umbrella, shading the water to lure fish. This canopy feeding trick was highlighted on BBC's The Life of Birds and even spoofed in a comedy sketch, proving its fame. By casting a shadow, the birds create a cool spot that draws curious fish into view, letting the heron snap them up. The method works best at dusk, when fish are most active near the surface. It shows how a simple behavioral tool can turn a modest bird into a master fisher.
• Standing between 42.5 and 66 cm tall, the black heron is about the length of a school ruler, while weighing only 0.27 to 0.39 kg, roughly the mass of a large apple. Its sleek black plumage, black bill and bright yellow feet make it easy to spot against the water. These dimensions place it squarely in the medium-sized heron category, allowing it to maneuver deftly over shallow ponds and rice fields. Knowing its size helps birdwatchers differentiate it from larger egrets that share its habitat.
• During the rainy season the black heron builds twig nests, often joining mixed-species colonies that can number in the hundreds. Each clutch holds two to four pale-blue eggs. These colonies, recorded at Lake Rwihinda in Burundi, have shrunk sharply as farmers drain marshes.
• Although most black herons live across Sub-Saharan Africa, the species also turns up far beyond its core range. Records show it in Madagascar, as well as occasional sightings in Greece and Italy. It favors shallow open waters, lake edges, marshes, rice, and tidal flats.
• Black herons can gather in surprisingly large feeding parties. While many hunt alone, observers have recorded groups of up to 50 individuals, and the highest count ever noted was 200 birds. Such gatherings usually happen at sunset.
