• A black heron hunts by folding its wings into a tent around its head, creating a pool of shadow on the water below. Fish mistake the darkness for shelter and swim straight into its bill. No other wading bird hunts this way — it's a technique seen only in a handful of heron species worldwide, and it works so well the bird can catch prey in water too bright and shallow for normal hunting.
• The black heron's skeleton is a masterpiece of weight-saving. Hollow bones, fused vertebrae, and air sacs running through its body mean a bird standing 45 centimetres tall weighs less than 400 grams — lighter than a can of cola.
