Fascinating facts about the Grey Seal

• A grey seal can dive deeper than 300 metres — further down than most submarines venture — yet their eyes are built for absolute darkness, not light. On land they look almost blind, with pupils that barely shrink. Underwater, those same pupils dilate to the size of a dime, letting in every photon of bioluminescent fish light from the abyss. They hunt in zones where sunlight has never reached.
• Grey seals are born with white fur so thick it insulates better than the blubber underneath — newborns spend their first three weeks on ice floes doing almost nothing but eating and sleeping, packing on 2 kilograms of body weight every single day. By weaning day they've tripled their mass. Then their mother abandons them, and they must teach themselves to swim and hunt in water colder than 5°C.
• Unlike most seals, grey seals produce sound underwater that rival the complexity of whale song — they bark, whistle, and make rhythmic knocking patterns unique to each individual, possibly to claim territory or find mates in murky water where sight is useless. Underwater listening stations have recorded them 'talking' for hours without surfacing.
• The North Atlantic grey seal population crashed to near extinction — fewer than 500 animals by the 1970s — then rebounded so dramatically that today around 125,000 live in European waters alone. This isn't conservation success; it's ecological chaos: they now eat 80,000 tonnes of fish annually and are blamed for collapsing cod stocks in the North Sea, forcing fishermen and seals into direct conflict.
• A grey seal's whiskers (vibrissae) are so sensitive they can detect water vibrations smaller than a single millimetre — thin enough to sense the wake of a fish the thickness of a pencil moving 15 metres away in pitch darkness. Their brain dedicates an enormous region to processing whisker signals, turning their face into a living sonar array that outperforms any electronic sensor at close range.
