• A bearded seal can dive to 600 metres and hold its breath for over 30 minutes—deep enough to reach the abyssal plains where sunlight dies and water pressure would crush a car. Their whiskers aren't decoration: each one is packed with nerves that detect the tiny vibrations of a buried clam moving 30 centimetres away in absolute darkness. They've outsourced their eyes and tuned their face into a living metal detector for the seafloor.
• At birth, a bearded seal pup weighs 30 kg and grows to 400 kg in less than four weeks—gaining roughly 10 kg per day on milk that's 50% fat. Mother and calf bond on a single ice floe, and if the floe breaks before weaning is done, the pup drowns. Climate change is fracturing ice earlier each spring, and pups are running out of time.
• Bearded seals sing underwater in the darkness—each male produces a haunting, individual song that echoes through the Arctic night, transmitted across hundreds of kilometres through water. Losing access to stable, thick ice forces them to search for new holes, burning energy in a shrinking habitat.
