• The Australian pelican has the longest bill of any bird on Earth—up to 50 centimetres, longer than its entire body. That bill isn't just for show: it's a precision net with a pouch that holds three times more fish than the pelican's stomach can. A single scoop can haul in 4.5 kilograms of water and prey, which the bird then drains before swallowing. Evolution designed it as a bucket, not a spear, which means pelicans hunt by skimming the surface, not diving.
