• The Australasian grebe's legs are positioned so far back on its body that it cannot walk on land — it looks like a duck that forgot how to waddle. This extreme rear-leg placement makes them rocket-fast underwater (they can outmanoeuvre fish) but completely helpless ashore. Even to nest, they build floating platforms of rotting vegetation anchored to reeds, because stepping onto solid ground is biomechanically impossible.
• When a chick is threatened, the parent grebe doesn't flee — it dives with the baby clinging to its back, dragging the chick underwater for up to 30 seconds while predators circle above. The chick's lungs are specially adapted to hold its breath. This behaviour is so reliable that Indigenous Australians observed it centuries before Western scientists documented the adaptation.
• These grebes have no tail feathers, only a puffball of down at the rear. Their body is so hydrodynamic that they've essentially erased the tail evolution left them with, trading it for speed in dense aquatic vegetation where milliseconds matter when hunting damselflies and tiny fish. They're shaped like a bullet someone fired at water.
• The Australasian grebe moults so completely that for 3–4 weeks it cannot fly at all — it sheds every primary feather simultaneously and becomes temporarily flightless on the same lake where it hunts and raises young. During this vulnerable window, they stay in the deepest parts of freshwater lakes where predators struggle to reach them, returning to visibility only once new feathers harden.
• Pairs perform elaborate synchronized diving duels, surfacing in perfect unison while making loud, piercing calls that sound like mechanical alarm bells. These duets serve as duets strengthen pair bonds before breeding season and can last for hours. Two grebes on a lake create a soundscape that carries across water for kilometres — a freshwater equivalent of whale song that coordinates their breeding territory.
