Atlantic Wolffish

Fascinating facts about the Atlantic Wolffish

• A 1758 Linnaeus description placed this fish in the monotypic genus Anarhichas, making it the type species of its own group – a taxonomic lone wolf that still carries the “lupus” label for its wolf-like teeth. This shows how distinctive its bite was even to early naturalists.
• The biggest Atlantic wolffish ever recorded measured 1.5 m (5 ft) long and tipped the scales at almost 18 kg (40 lb), rivaling a small adult human. Its size illustrates why its powerful jaws can crack shells that would shatter most predators’ teeth.
• Living on the ocean floor at depths of 20-500 m (66-1,640 ft) in water as cold as –1 °C (30 °F), the species produces a natural antifreeze to keep its blood flowing. This biochemical trick lets it thrive where most fish would freeze, highlighting evolution’s solutions to extreme habitats.
• Females lay eggs 5.5-6.0 mm in diameter – among the largest fish eggs known – and the male guards the clutch for up to four months, staying with the nest until the young are independent. Such parental care is rare among fish and reveals a complex family strategy for survival.
• U.S. landings of Atlantic wolffish plummeted from a peak of 1,207 t in 1983 to just 64.7 t in 2007, a 95 % drop in bycatch volume. This sharp decline signals that the species is a sensitive barometer of the health of cold-water benthic ecosystems.
