About the Salema Porgy

The salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) glides through the warm waters of the eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and even the southwestern Indian Ocean with a sleek, oval silhouette that fits its length about 2.8 times into its depth. Its silvery flank is pierced by eight to ten thin golden lines, and a distinctive black spot marks the base of each pectoral fin. Males typically range from 15 to 30 cm, while females grow larger, often reaching 31 to 45 cm, and the biggest individuals can hit 51 cm. Beneath its smooth cheeks lie scales, a scaly sheath at the anal-fin base, and a single row of incisor-like teeth that scrape plant material rather than crush shells. In the crystal-clear shallows to 70 m depth, the salema porgy feeds largely on seagrass, especially Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean, and its epiphytic algae, supplementing its herbivorous diet with occasional crustaceans. This plant-eater can become so abundant that, as observed in Portugal in 2014, it overgrazed local seagrass beds, prompting experiments with alternative grasses like Zostera noltii. A surprising twist to its otherwise placid life is its occasional ichthyoallyeinotoxicity: during certain periods the fish accumulates algal toxins, and ingestion can trigger vivid, two-hour-delayed hallucinations that may last up to 36 hours, a phenomenon that thrust the “dreamfish” into headlines after a 2006 Mediterranean restaurant incident.
