About the Arroyo Toad

The arroyo toad (Anaxyrus californicus) is a stocky, blunt-nosed toad measuring 5 to 7.5 cm (2.0 to 3.0 in) in length, its skin warty and its dorsal palette shifting among greenish, grey, or salmon tones accented by a light stripe across the head and eyelids. Light sacral and mid-dorsal patches, large oval parotoid glands, and often-absent cranial crests give it a distinctive silhouette, while juveniles appear ashy-white, olive, or salmon with occasional black spotting and red-tipped tubercles on the back. In the dry washes, known as arroyos, of Southern California from Santa Barbara County south into northwestern Baja California, the toad seeks sandy or cobbly channels with swift currents, nesting in shallow pebble-lined pools and retreating into the sand for shelter. Nocturnal by habit, it spends daylight hours underground, emerging at night to hunt ants and other small insects, lunging with a rapid hop and a sticky tongue, then shifting to beetles, caterpillars, moths, crickets, and even conspecific eggs as it matures. A surprising trait is its acute sensitivity to water-quality changes, making it an inadvertent sentinel for environmental health; its unique mating call, heard during the late-winter and early-spring breeding rush, distinguishes it from all other regional amphibians, drawing females to lay an average of 4,700 eggs in two-row strings that hatch in four to six days.
