Striped cucumber beetle

Fascinating facts about the Striped cucumber beetle

• The striped cucumber beetle can tolerate cucurbitacin, a toxin that most herbivores avoid, and it is actually drawn to this compound. This resistance enables the beetle to feed on the seeds of cucurbit plants that contain the chemical, giving it access to a food source unavailable to many competitors. By exploiting cucurbitacin-rich seeds, the beetle can thrive on crops such as cucumbers and pumpkins where other insects are repelled.
• Male striped cucumber beetles release an aggregation pheromone while feeding, which attracts both male and female conspecifics to the same plant. The first males to arrive act as pioneers, using their scent to draw a crowd that soon forms a dense feeding group. This aggregation not only concentrates food but also creates many mating opportunities for the pioneering male, increasing his reproductive success.
• When feeding, the striped cucumber beetle can inoculate cucurbit plants with the bacterium Erwinia tracheiphila, which colonises the plant's vascular system and blocks water and nutrient flow. The beetles acquire the bacteria while overwintering on infected foliage, then transmit it to crops in spring as they resume feeding.
• An adult striped cucumber beetle measures about 5.25 mm, making it roughly a millimetre shorter than the western corn rootworm, which is around 6.3 mm long. This size difference, together with its distinctive yellow elytra, helps separate the two species in the field. The beetle's three black stripes run the full length of the wing covers, unlike the rootworm's marks that fade before the tip. Those uninterrupted stripes are a reliable visual cue for identification.
• During the cold months the beetles hide beneath low vegetation close to future cucumber fields, waiting for warmer soil. When temperatures rise above 13 °C, they emerge and first feed on early-season plants such as aster flowers and willow trees, taking advantage of the first available foliage and pollen. As cucurbit seedlings appear, the adults leave those hosts and congregate on the crops, a movement that also serves to locate potential mates.
