Fascinating facts about the American Dagger

• The American dagger moth spans 50 to 65 mm from wing tip to tip, placing it among the modest-sized noctuids. It inhabits deciduous woodlands and forests east of the Rocky Mountains, where adults are on the wing from April through September. In the northern part of its range it produces a single brood, while farther south it can raise two to three broods each year, extending its activity well into autumn.
• A sharp black dash marks the anal area of each forewing, a distinctive feature that sets the American dagger moth apart. The forewing also bears a double postmedian line with a white band between the two lines, giving the wing a striking patterned look. Together with the dark hindwing of females, these markings provide reliable visual cues for identification in the field.
• Male American dagger moths display a gray hindwing crossed by a faint, darker median line, while females lack this line and have a completely dark hindwing. Apart from this hindwing colour difference, the two sexes share the same wing size and forewing pattern, including the double postmedian line and black anal dash. This sexual dimorphism allows observers to tell males from females without handling the insects.
• The caterpillars of the American dagger moth can reach a length of 50 mm. When young they are densely covered in bright yellow setae, which later become pale yellow or white as they mature. Throughout every growth stage thin black setae appear on the first and third abdominal segments, and a single tuft of black setae sits on the eighth segment.
• Numerous observations note that the larval hairs of the American dagger moth can cause skin irritation in people who handle them. Despite these reports, scientific investigation has found no evidence that the hairs contain any venomous substance. The irritation is therefore attributed to mechanical irritation from the setae rather than a toxic component. This distinction clarifies that the moth's hairs are a nuisance but not a poisonous threat.
