Fascinating facts about the Kangaroo
- Males can tower over females, reaching a head-body length of 1.2 m and a tail up to 900 mm, while females never exceed 840 mm in body length and 700 mm tail. A female may weigh up to 20 kg, but a male can tip the scales at 49 kg, more than double the female's weight. Other sources push the extremes even higher, reporting males as heavy as 70 kg and females ranging between 15 kg and 30 kg.
- The species sticks to low-lying tropical grasslands below 500 m elevation, spreading across the Kimberley, the Top End and Cape York. Its range hugs perennial grass-filled plains and monsoonal eucalypt woodlands, but it never climbs higher than half a kilometre. This altitude ceiling ties the kangaroo to warm, fire-prone habitats, making it especially vulnerable to changes in fire regimes that reshape its grassland home.
- Breeding can happen any time, yet most births are timed just before the northern wet season, ensuring newborns have fresh grass when the rains arrive. In the Top End, mating peaks around December, aligning the gestation of roughly 35 days with the start of the rains.
- The IUCN lists the antilopine kangaroo as Least Concern, noting a declining trend that still falls short of vulnerable criteria. Still, growing pastoral use, altered fire patterns and hunting pressure are flagged as possible threats. Monitoring is recommended to catch any future slide.
- Antilopine kangaroos live in mobs that can swell to about 30 individuals, with a clear hierarchy among the males. When danger looms, from humans or dingoes, several groups may merge into a larger assembly for safety.
