It is described as a living fossil because it is the sole survivor of ancient mainland rabbits that vanished long ago. • Among all rabbit species, the Amami rabbit possesses a unique chromosome count of 46 diploid chromosomes. This number is not found in any other leporid, highlighting a distinct genetic makeup. • The genus name Pentalagus was chosen because the rabbit has only five molars on each side of its upper jaw, unlike the six seen in other living rabbits.
