• An alpaca's fiber grows at roughly 3 inches per year—finer than cashmere, warmer than sheep's wool, and so hypoallergenic that people allergic to all other animal fibers can wear it. A single alpaca can produce enough fleece in a year to knit 20 sweaters. This is why Andean herders have bred them for over 6,000 years: one animal, worn across generations.
• Alpacas spit with surgical precision when threatened, but only at rivals or predators—never unprovoked at humans. They aim for the face, using a projectile of saliva mixed with stomach acid that stings on impact. Spitting is learned behavior: mothers teach their crias (babies) by example. A human-raised alpaca will almost never spit at people.
