- Male Allen's squirrels typically weigh between 290 and 491 grains, while females range from 345 to 510 grains, making females on average a little heavier. This difference is noted even though the species shows no obvious sexual dimorphism beyond body mass.
- Allen's squirrels are generally yellow-brown with black and grey grizzling, a darker head, lighter sides and legs, and a white-to-buff eye ring, while the tail is black with occasional buff or yellow touches and a frosted tip. Occasionally, individuals display melanism, giving them an unusually dark coat compared with the typical colouration. This darkening has been recorded in the wild, adding to the species' visual variation.
- The diet of Allen's squirrel is mainly herbivorous, focusing on tree seeds and fruit, but it also regularly consumes insects and their larvae. In addition to these plant and invertebrate foods, the squirrel will sometimes seize small vertebrates such as frogs, adding a protein source to its meals. It also opportunistically feeds on cultivated crops like peanuts, maize and tomatoes when they are available.
- Its natural range stretches across the northeastern Mexican states of southeastern Coahuila, central Nuevo León and western Tamaulipas, reaching as far south as the extreme north of San Luis Potosí. Within this area the squirrel mainly lives in oak and oak-pine montane forests, habitats that provide abundant tree seeds.
- Allen's squirrels can become a notable problem for farmers because they eat ripening corn, causing especially severe damage to cornfields. They are not limited to corn, however, and will also feed on a wide range of cultivated crops such as peanuts, maize, oats, tomatoes, grapes, apples, peaches, mangoes and plums when these are available. This opportunistic feeding makes the species an occasional agricultural pest in the regions where it lives.
