• A gap the width of a human finger runs down the middle of the African openbill's bill — and it opens and closes like scissors. The bird snaps this gap shut around freshwater snails, using the blade-like lower mandible to cut through the shell while the upper mandible holds it steady. No other stork in Africa has evolved this precision tool, and it lets openbills hunt snails that other birds cannot crack.
• During the dry season in southern Africa, openbills gather in colonies of up to 10,000 birds, turning riverbanks into a roiling mass of white and black plumage. When the rains return and snail populations explode, they disperse just as suddenly — vanishing from one region entirely within weeks. This boom-and-bust hunting rhythm keeps them nomadic across an entire continent, following invisible waves of mollusks invisible to human eyes.
