• A pair of African fish eagles can hear each other's calls from 2 kilometres away — a duet so piercing it cuts through thunderstorms. They perform this acoustic display together dozens of times a day, locking their voices in synchrony as they perch in the same tree. This isn't background chatter; it's a territorial anthem and a marriage certificate, renewed constantly to warn rivals and reinforce their bond.
• An African fish eagle's eyes are 4 times sharper than human vision, letting them spot a 10-centimetre fish rippling the surface from 2 kilometres up. When they dive, their pupils shrink to pinpricks — a built-in sunshade that keeps their retinas from burning out at the moment of the kill.
