• Standing as tall as a double-decker bus, the Andean flamingo ranges from 1 to 1.4 m in height, spreads a wingspan of 1.4 to 1.6 m, and can weigh between 1.5 kg and 4.9 kg. These dimensions make it the largest flamingo in the Andes and one of the two heaviest living flamingos.
• Only the Andean flamingo sports bright yellow legs and three-toed feet, a visual cue that sets it apart from every other flamingo. Its bill is pale yellow near the skull but black for most of its length, and the lower mandible is less pronounced than in other genera. These unique traits hint at specialized feeding adaptations for filtering tiny diatoms from the lake bottom.
• Andean flamingos lay a single pinkish-white egg each season, measuring about seven centimeters and weighing 113-141 g. Both parents share incubation duties for 27-31 days, then raise the chick in communal crèches that can hold hundreds of youngsters. Disturbance to nesting sites can ripple through an entire breeding colony, reducing future recruitment.
