• At 3,650 metres above sea level in the Andes, Andean flamingos filter-feed in lakes so alkaline they would dissolve human skin — yet these birds thrive where almost nothing else survives. Their beaks bend at a 45-degree angle and contain specialized lamellae (hair-like filters) that work backwards, sieving tiny algae and brine shrimp from water that reaches pH 11. They're among the world's highest-living flamingos, adapted to mountains where oxygen levels are a third lower than at sea level.
• Fewer than 40,000 Andean flamingos remain on Earth — fewer than the human population of a small town — and the entire species depends on six isolated salt lakes across the Andes. Population surveys between 1997 and 2006 showed numbers had collapsed by 50%, driven by illegal mining operations draining their lakes and climate change triggering droughts that concentrate toxic salts. They are one of South America's rarest flamingos, and a single bad drought season could push some colonies toward extinction.
• Flamingos are pink because they eat pink food: Andean flamingos consume carotenoid pigments from algae (particularly spirulina) and brine shrimp, which stain their feathers, skin, and legs the signature salmon-pink colour. Chicks are born grey and only develop their colour when fed carotenoid-rich food — stop the algae diet and within months a flamingo turns white. Their vivid plumage is an honest advertisement: the brightest birds have access to the most food.
• An Andean flamingo filters its entire body weight in water every single day through its backwards-bending beak, processing up to 500 millilitres while eating little more than a teaspoon of actual food. This ultra-efficient feeding system evolved specifically for hyperalkaline lakes where nutrition is scarce but water is abundant. It's why they can survive in an environment so chemically harsh it would poison most birds within hours.
• Colonial breeders that gather in synchronized dancing crowds, Andean flamingos perform elaborate group displays — head flagging, wing salutes, and marching formations — that can involve hundreds of birds moving as a single organism. These rituals strengthen pair bonds and synchronize breeding, but they also make the species vulnerable: a single disturbance at a breeding lake can trigger a stampede that crushes eggs and chicks. Conservation now depends on protecting breeding sites from human intrusion during nesting season.
