• The Dalmatian pelican has the longest bill of any bird alive — up to 47 centimetres, longer than a ruler and a pencil combined. Inside that bill sits a throat pouch that can hold 13 litres of water, enough to fill a bucket. They scoop fish in bulk, then drain the water before swallowing, making them living fishing nets rather than hunters.
• A Dalmatian pelican weighs up to 15 kilograms but still flies — a heaviness matched only by the mute swan and a handful of other species. To take off from water, they need a running start of 5 to 6 metres, slapping their feet against the surface while flapping, like sprinting before launching.
• These pelicans dive from heights of up to 10 metres and hit the water at speed, yet their skulls have air sacs that act as shock absorbers.
