• An African elephant's trunk contains 40,000 muscles and can lift 300 kilograms — yet it's sensitive enough to pick up a single blade of grass. The trunk is an extension of the nose and upper lip fused into a single sensory powerhouse, with touch receptors so refined the elephant can feel vibrations from other elephants walking kilometres away through the ground beneath its feet.
• Elephants have a second brain buried in their spine called the sacral ganglion, which processes pain and touch so quickly the foot can react to a hot surface before the main brain even registers the signal. This ancient neural system, unchanged for 60 million years, gave early elephants a survival edge — and it still does.
• A matriarch elephant carries a map of her entire territory inside her brain: every waterhole, every seasonal fruiting tree, every salt lick, recorded across her 60-year lifespan and taught to her daughters and granddaughters.
