The zitting cisticola constructs its nest by binding living leaves together with a soft fabric of felted plant-down, cobwebs and grass, forming a cup-shaped structure. Over the cup a canopy of tied-together leaves or grasses is added, providing camouflage among the surrounding vegetation. Females that accept the male's display complete the nest and lay three to six eggs inside.
Seventeen subspecies of the zitting cisticola are recognised, and they fall into two main groups separated by a deep genetic divide that matches the large distribution gap between western Iran and Pakistan.
In eastern Asia the zitting cisticola's song changes to a double-zit pattern, sounding "zit zit - zit zit - zit zit" rather than the single, evenly spaced calls heard elsewhere. This rhythm is heard across the region and matches the distribution of several southeastern subspecies, including C. tinnabulans and C. brunniceps, as well as the broader Indonesian and Australasian forms.
The species was recorded breeding in Britain for the first time in 2025, marking a notable northward expansion of its European range. While most populations remain resident, the bird is a rare vagrant to northern Europe and its overall range has been gradually widening, though the newly established northern colonies are especially vulnerable to severe winters.
