• Weighing just 23 grams — less than a handful of grapes — the zebra dove is one of the world's tiniest pigeons, yet it holds a record: it has the fastest wingbeat of any dove species at roughly 9 beats per second. This extreme wing speed means it can launch itself vertically from the ground in a single explosive takeoff, escaping predators before they've registered the blur. For an animal this small, speed through the air is survival.
