- The Yucatán squirrel measures between 450 and 500 mm in total length, which makes it noticeably larger than the eastern gray squirrel. Both males and females share the same size range and weigh between 341 and 475 g. It inhabits lowland forests and is never found above 750 m altitude, staying within the warm, dry deciduous and evergreen woodlands of the peninsula.
- An adult Yucatán squirrel has a relatively long tail measuring 240 mm, which is proportionally long compared with its body. The tail is strikingly white with a clear black stripe running down each side of the central white band. Its tail hairs are noticeably shorter than those on the head and body, giving the tail a smoother appearance.
- The skull of the Yucatán squirrel is described as short and broad, with an overall length of about 57 mm. Its facial portion is particularly short, a feature highlighted in its anatomical description. This compact skull shape is part of the species' distinctive morphology within the Sciurus genus.
- The Yucatán squirrel lives in dry deciduous and evergreen forests, semiarid pine-oak woodlands and secondary forest that has regenerated after logging. It is restricted to lowland areas, never occurring above 750 metres altitude, so it remains within the warm, dry woodlands of the peninsula. During daylight it spends most of its time high in the trees, being most active in the early morning and often seen sunning on a branch later in the day.
- The Yucatán squirrel's diet includes soft fruit, nuts and seeds, but a 2009 study showed it relies mainly on flowers, buds and shoots that it gathers from the canopy. This preference for tender plant parts reflects its foraging habit of moving through the treetops during daylight hours. By feeding on these resources it exploits the seasonal abundance of flowering and budding vegetation in its lowland forest habitat.
