About the Yellow-bellied Sea Snake

The yellow-belly sea snake (Hydrophis platurus) glides through tropical oceans with a striking bicolor coat: a glossy brown dorsum meets a vivid yellow ventral surface, the two hues often separated by a razor-sharp line. Its laterally compressed body, reduced ventral scales and paddle-like tail are perfect adaptations for a fully pelagic life, while a valved nostril and a palatine seal keep seawater out during dives. Even its skin is semi-permeable, extracting dissolved oxygen to prolong sub-surface forays. Adults reach up to 88 cm, females slightly larger than males, and the species is viviparous, giving birth to live young after a six-month gestation in warm waters. These snakes spend their entire existence at sea, riding oceanic drift lines and surface currents, sometimes forming massive surface aggregations that may number in the thousands. They hunt by floating motionless, luring pelagic fish that seek shelter, then snapping forward, or even swimming backwards, to seize prey, a rare capability among serpents. Though highly venomous, bites are infrequent, usually involving fishermen extracting the snakes from nets. Remarkably, they can survive up to seven months without water, relying on fresh-water lenses that form on the sea surface after heavy rain, a testament to their resilience in an ever-shifting marine world.
