South American Sipo

Fascinating facts about the South American Sipo

• Although it never injects venom, the South American sipo moves through the forest canopy like a vine, earning locals names such as “vine-snake” and “green vine-snake.” Its semi-arboreal habit shows how some colubrids have swapped ground hunting for a life among branches.
• You’ll find this snake threading through the southern and eastern coasts of Brazil, from Bahia up to Santa Catarina, and even on the island of Ilha Grande. Its narrow range highlights how coastal ecosystems host their own hidden reptile specialists.
• The many Portuguese nicknames, cipó, caninana-verde-de-cabeça-preta, cobra-espada, translate to “vine,” “black-headed green cane,” and “sword-snake,” reflecting how locals see the animal’s sleek, green form as part of the forest’s own foliage.
• Being non-venomous yet active in trees, the sipo shows that not all dangerous-looking snakes need venom to thrive.
• Its presence in municipalities like Rio Fortuna and Ilhéus shows it occurs in those locations.
