- Leatherbacks plunge deeper than any other reptile, reaching 1,280 m (4,200 ft) in a single dive. This depth exceeds the limits of all diving tetrapods except beaked and sperm whales, letting them chase jellyfish far below the sunlit zone. By tolerating such pressure they exploit a food niche no other sea turtle can.
- A single leatherback can span the width of a small bus: its front flippers stretch up to 2.7 m (8.9 ft) tip-to-tip, and the biggest verified adult measured 213 cm (6.99 ft) carapace length and weighed 650 kg (1,433 lb). Those dimensions make it the heaviest non-crocodilian reptile, dwarfing all other turtles.
