• A leatherback dives deeper than any other reptile on Earth — past 1,200 metres into the abyss where the pressure would crush most animals flat. Their shell isn't bone; it's a leather-like skin stretched over a frame of tiny bones, flexible enough to compress like a sponge and spring back when they surface. They chase jellyfish into the darkness, following bioluminescent prey signals no other turtle can see.
• Their body temperature stays 5 to 14 degrees Celsius warmer than the water around them — something no other sea turtle can do. Counter-intuitively, this reptile is warm-blooded. Brown fat beneath the skin generates heat as they swim, allowing them to hunt in Arctic waters off Canada and Norway where other turtles would go comatose. It's a loophole that turned a cold-blooded creature into an ocean nomad.
• A female leatherback swallows a jellyfish the size of a beach ball, then another, then another — up to 200 in a single feeding session. They process a jellyfish every 7 seconds. Yet jellyfish are 95% water, so she must eat roughly 2 tonnes of gelatinous prey daily just to fuel a body that weighs 700 kilograms. They're living straws, converting almost nothing into survival.
• Every 2 to 3 years, a female crawls onto the same beach where she was born — sometimes 10,000 kilometres away — guided by Earth's magnetic field embedded in her brain. She digs a pit in the sand and deposits 80 to 100 eggs, then vanishes back to sea and doesn't return for years. She never sees her hatchlings; the moment her eggs hatch, the babies sprint to the ocean alone, orienting to the reflection of moonlight on water.
• In the last 30 years, the global population has crashed from roughly 115,000 nesting females to fewer than 25,000 — a 78% collapse, mostly from fishing nets that drown them by the thousands. They're caught in lines meant for other fish, tangled in plastic bags they mistake for jellyfish.
