- The moth's hindwings display a rich bright copper colour, the striking hue that gives it the common name copper underwing. Its wingspan measures 47-54 mm, with females usually a little larger than males. The underside of the hindwings bears a pale central area that contrasts sharply with darker margins, a pattern that helps separate it from the similar Svensson's copper underwing. This vivid copper shading is a key field mark for identification.
- A pyramidea flies at night from August to October, the period that defines its British flight season. During these evenings it is strongly attracted to artificial light and especially to sugary baits. The species is univoltine, producing one generation each year, so the nocturnal activity represents the adult stage of its single annual cycle. - The caterpillar of the copper underwing is green with white markings, a colour that blends with foliage and provides camouflage while it feeds.
