Fascinating facts about the Urial

• Male urials bear massive horns that can reach a length of 100 cm, curving outward from the top of the head before turning inward to finish behind the skull. These impressive weapons are a hallmark of the species and set the males apart from the females, whose horns are noticeably shorter and compressed. The size of the horns is matched by the animal's stature, with adult males standing 80 to 90 cm at the shoulder.
• Urials are native to high-altitude landscapes, occupying montane zones as high as 4 500 m in the Pamir, Hindu Kush and Himalayan ranges. Within this elevational band they are found across northeastern Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, southwestern Kazakhstan, northern Pakistan and Ladakh in north-western India.
• A 2024-25 survey at Kalabagh Game Reserve counted 532 Punjab urials, producing an average density of 8.9 individuals per square kilometre. An earlier 2021 survey of the broader 7,953 km² area recorded 3,484 urials with a density of 0.4 per km².
• In Baluchistan, urial numbers fell from 860 individuals in 2019 to 534 by 2022. The decline was recorded in the Khuzdar and Lasbela districts.
• The urial's breeding season starts in November, when rams herd groups of four or five ewes. After a five-month gestation, females usually deliver a single lamb between April and June.
