• The western skink is a small, smooth-scaled lizard that reaches a total length of just 100 to 210 mm, about 4 to 8.25 inches, counting both body and tail. This modest size places it among the six lizard species recorded in Canada. Despite its diminutive stature it is a common but secretive animal, often slipping unnoticed through its range. Its overall dimensions therefore define both its appearance and its subtle presence in the landscape.
• Western skinks are found from sea level up to at least 2,130 m, showing they can inhabit both lowland and mountainous zones. They are most common in early successional stages or open patches within habitats, preferring somewhat moist ground while avoiding heavy brush and dense forest. This preference leads them to frequent grassland, chaparral, pine-oak and juniper-sage woodlands where the soil stays moist for nesting.
• Young western skinks display a vivid bright blue tail that gradually fades to grey as they mature into adults. This striking juvenile colouration is most noticeable before the tail is lost or regrown, after which the new tail is often darker and misshapen. The colour change marks the transition from a conspicuous youngster to a more cryptic adult, aiding the lizard's shift in predator-avoidance strategies as it ages.
• When seized by a predator, a western skink can drop its tail, which then wriggles violently. The detached tail continues to move, drawing attention while the lizard escapes.
• Female western skinks defend their nests, repair damage, and even bask before returning to add heat for the eggs. She basks in the sun then goes back to provide additional warmth.
