Fascinating facts about the Colombian Night Monkey

• Even the heaviest gray-bellied night monkey barely tips the scales at 1.3 kg, while the smallest can be as light as 0.5 kg. Despite this weight spread, males and females look identical, showing no sexual dimorphism at all. Such uniformity means researchers can't tell the sexes apart by appearance.
• A night monkey family never exceeds five members: a monogamous pair plus up to three offspring. The group is most active during twilight and bright moonlight, but the male does the heavy lifting, he provides the bulk of care, while the female only nurses.
• Each pair defends a home range, about 0.1 km², and marks its borders with oily secretions from the base of its tail. Scent therefore becomes the primary language of territory, allowing neighbors to recognize who lives where without a visual showdown.
• Reproduction runs on a tight schedule: gestation lasts exactly 133 days, usually yielding a single infant, with twins a rare exception. Babies are born after the dry season ends, and the young stay with the family until they're 2.5-3.5 years old, at which point they leave to find a mate.
• When fruit is scarce, these nocturnal foragers turn into opportunistic hunters, snatching insects, nectar, and even small birds or mammals. Their diet spans sweet fruit, flower nectar, leaves, bugs, and vertebrate prey.
