• A woodcock's eyes sit so far back on its skull that it can see behind itself without turning its head — a 360-degree panorama that lets it spot predators while its face is buried in mud searching for earthworms. No other bird has vision quite like this.
• Male woodcocks perform one of nature's most bizarre courtship displays: they launch into the air at dusk, spiral upward in near-total darkness, then dive back down while their tail feathers whistle and chirp a three-part song that travels half a kilometre through the forest.
