• A western gull chick learns to beg differently depending on which parent feeds it — and parents remember their chick's voice so precisely that a hungry sibling's cry goes ignored. This is one of the few bird species where vocal recognition between parent and chick is stronger than between mates, revealing that in gull families, knowing your kid's voice matters more than knowing your partner's.
• Western gulls are one of the few seabird species rapidly expanding their range northward as ocean temperatures rise, now breeding as far north as British Columbia when they were once confined to Mexico and California. They're colonising new islands in decades rather than centuries, a speed that suggests some populations are genetically adapting to cooler water faster than climate models predicted.
• A western gull's eye is ringed with a bright red or yellow orbital patch — and the intensity of that colour signals breeding quality and immune strength to potential mates.
