Ashy Tailorbird

Fascinating facts about the Ashy Tailorbird

• René Lesson first described the ashy tailorbird in 1830, placing a 7 cm (2.8 in) long, 12 g (0.42 oz) bird on the scientific record long before DNA could separate it from its olive-backed cousin. That early work still guides today’s taxonomy, showing how a single description can anchor centuries of ornithology.
• Even though it prefers lowland forest near the coast, the bird has been spotted as high as 900 m (3,000 ft) on Sumatra and Borneo.
• A pair-bonded duo builds a nest by literally stitching a leaf together with spider silk or plant fibers, then hangs it less than 1 m (3.3 ft) above ground. This low-tech architecture lets them hide eggs from predators while staying close to their foraging routes.
• The clutch holds just two to three eggs, and the species is found across Southeast Asia, from southern Myanmar to the Philippine island of Mapun.
• When oil palm plantations replace rainforests, the bird switches its menu to the introduced weevil Elaeidobius kamerunicus, a pollinator of the palm. This dietary pivot raises concerns that the birds might curb palm yields, illustrating how wildlife can reshape human agriculture.
