• A glaucous-winged gull takes four years to grow its white head and pale wings — until then it's mottled brown, making young birds look like a completely different species. This slow maturation means a teenager gull can't breed, can't claim good nesting territory, and must scavenge scraps while adults feast on fresh fish. Evolution built in a long apprenticeship for one of the ocean's most successful hunters.

• A glaucous-winged gull can live 44 years in the wild, and a tagged bird named Gull 303 returned to the same nesting island in southeast Alaska for over three decades. They remember their mate, their chicks, and the exact rock where they nested, coming back each spring like clockwork. A human watching a gull today might be watching a bird that has nested on that same beach since before smartphones existed.
• They steal and learn from each other. A gull will watch another open a clam by dropping it on rocks, then copy the exact height and angle needed — a behaviour that spreads through colonies like gossip. Some individuals invent new food sources (puncturing sea urchin spines in a specific way, for example), and within months dozens of gulls are doing it too. They have culture, and it evolves.
