• A Muscovy duck's face is part skin, part flesh — covered in bumpy red nodules called caruncles that swell and darken when the male is aroused or threatened. These aren't feathers; they're bare, warty skin that bleeds colour like a blush. Males use them to signal dominance to rivals, turning a deeper crimson when testosterone spikes. Females have smaller, duller caruncles, a visible reminder that even facial features are shaped by sex and status.
• Unlike most ducks, Muscovy ducks don't quack — they hiss, whistle, and burp instead.
