• A Welcome Swallow can snap up an insect mid-flight in 15 milliseconds — faster than you can blink. Their eyes point slightly forward rather than sideways like most birds, giving them binocular vision that tracks prey the way a fighter pilot locks onto a target. They hunt in the same airspace as dragonflies, their only real aerial competition, and consistently win the race to food.
• These birds navigate by the Earth's magnetic field, sensing it through magnetite crystals in their inner ears. In spring, Welcome Swallows breeding in Australia's southern coast suddenly know it's time to shift north toward warmer insects — a journey of up to 2,000 km — without ever flying it before.
