• At 30 centimetres long, the aplomado falcon hunts like a feathered assassin working in pairs — one bird flushes prey from cover while its partner waits overhead to strike. This tag-team hunting strategy is almost unknown among falcons, making them more like coordinated wolf packs than solitary raptors. They often hunt at dawn and dusk when their prey is most active, giving them a schedule advantage that solitary hunters miss.
• The aplomado falcon vanished entirely from the United States by the 1950s — driven out by pesticide DDT, which thinned their eggshells until chicks died before hatching. In the 1980s, a bold captive breeding program began raising chicks in falcon facilities across Texas and New Mexico. Today, over 1,000 birds hunt American skies again, a direct result of reintroduction, making them a textbook conservation comeback that few raptids have matched.

When humans removed habitat in the 20th century, they had nowhere to breed; now, artificial nest platforms placed by conservation teams have become critical to their survival in the US.
• A single aplomado falcon pair can raise two broods in a single year — something most other Falco species never do.
