• Weedy seadragons can grow to about 45 cm. Their slender bodies are covered in small, leaf-like appendages that look like kelp fronds, giving them an excellent seaweed disguise; they move slowly through the water, drifting among kelp and seaweed beds where their camouflage protects them from predators.
• A female weedy seadragon deposits roughly 120 tiny eggs onto a specialised brood patch on the underside of the male's tail. The male then fertilises the clutch and carries it for about a month, keeping the eggs safe and well-oxygenated. When the incubation period ends, the hatchlings emerge fully independent and begin feeding almost immediately. This male-only parental care is typical of syngnathids and allows the young to start life on their own.
• After fertilisation the male cradles the egg mass on his tail for roughly a month, providing protection and oxygen until the fry are ready to hatch. Once the eggs hatch, the juveniles are completely independent and start feeding on tiny crustaceans right away.
• Unlike many of its syngnathid relatives, the weedy seadragon does not possess a prehensile tail for anchoring. Instead it drifts slowly through kelp and seaweed beds, relying on its leaf-shaped appendages to blend in with the surrounding flora, which acts as its primary defence against predators.
• Citizen-science observations recorded a 59 % drop in weedy seadragon numbers between 2011 and 2021, a period marked by repeated marine heatwaves across the Great Southern Reef. Researchers note that such a decline could meet IUCN criteria for listing the species as Endangered, though another study cautioned that the data are sparse.
