• A single weaver ant colony can span 12 trees and contain half a million workers, all coordinated by chemical signals so precise they can tell a nestmate from a stranger in milliseconds. They build living architecture by stitching leaves together with silk — but the silk doesn't come from them. Larvae are living spools, and workers hold them like glue guns to seal the edges. Move a colony just 50 metres and the ants will abandon their carefully constructed home and build an identical one from scratch in the new spot.
• When a forager weaver ant finds food, it doesn't just rush home — it walks slower on purpose, laying a chemical trail so concentrated that a naive ant following it will match its pace perfectly and arrive at the exact feeding spot. One nest can produce enough pupae annually to feed a family of four for weeks.
• A weaver ant's bite opens two separate channels in the victim's body: one injects venom, the other floods the wound with formic acid. The combination burns for hours and can kill insects 50 times heavier than the ant itself.
