• When a muskox calf is born on Arctic ice in April, its mother produces milk so rich in fat and protein that the calf can double its weight in just 3 weeks — faster than any other hoofed mammal in the Northern Hemisphere. This metabolic sprint lets calves reach full size before winter arrives, a race against a season that kills the weak.
• A muskox's coat has two layers: guard hairs that shed water like a raincoat, and an undercoat called qiviut that's eight times warmer than sheep's wool and costs more per kilogram than gold. Inuit weavers have harvested it for centuries, and a single shawl can sell for $2,000. The animal's own heating system keeps it alive at −40°C without shivering.
