• A plateau fence lizard's entire skeleton is laced with blue-green copper pigment — the same mineral that turns the Statue of Liberty green. Males flash these iridescent belly patches in split-second bursts to warn rivals that this rock is taken, turning their undersides into a neon threat display that works even in the blinding desert sun.
• When a plateau fence lizard is cornered, it doesn't run or bite. Instead, it flattens itself paper-thin against a rock, drops its heart rate by half, and stops breathing for up to 6 minutes. The predator's eyes are wired to detect movement — so the lizard becomes invisible by becoming still.
• At dawn, a plateau fence lizard spends 30 minutes doing push-ups on its favourite rock — not to show off, but to warm its muscles from 15°C to 35°C. A cold lizard is a slow lizard, and a slow lizard gets eaten. By mid-morning, when the rock hits 45°C, the same lizard retreats to shade or dies of overheating. Survival is a narrow temperature corridor.

One female can produce three separate clutches of eggs in a single spring, each potentially fathered by a different male she mated with seasons earlier. It's biological insurance in an unpredictable desert.
• The plateau fence lizard has moved its entire range upslope by an average of 65 metres over the past 40 years as the desert warms — a race against climate that's faster than most reptiles can manage. On some mountains, they've simply run out of 'up' to go, trapping populations with nowhere left to cool down.
