Field surveys show the species is found west of the Mahavavy River and north of the Manambolo River, confirming a tightly bounded western range.
- Its fingers are joined by a thin skin membrane that extends to the proximal phalanges, creating a partial web between the digits. The webbing is especially pronounced on the feet.
- Its skull is short, conical and set at a right angle on the spine, giving the animal an upright posture unlike most lemurs. The facial skeleton sits in front of the braincase rather than beneath it.
- Von der Decken's sifaka has a reduced toothcomb that contains only four teeth, unlike the six-tooth comb typical of most lemurs.
