• A viceroy butterfly looks almost identical to a monarch — same orange wings, black veins, white spots — but it's a completely different species that evolved to mimic the monarch's poisonous defence. For decades, scientists thought this was a textbook case of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless animal copies a toxic one. Then in the 1990s, researchers discovered the viceroy is actually poisonous too, making it a rare example of two toxic species reinforcing each other's warning colours. The mimicry didn't start as deception; it became a shared language.
• A viceroy's caterpillar feeds exclusively on willow and poplar trees, which contain compounds the insect collects and stores in its own body to become toxic.
