• While every other damselfly in Europe disappears by November, Sympecma fusca stays put — the only damselfly species on the continent that overwinters as an adult. Most insects either die or pupate underground; this one hunts on warm winter days when the air hits just 10°C, resuming life in spring after months of dormancy. It's a biological calendar nobody else kept.
• At just 28–32 millimetres long, the common winter damselfly is barely longer than a postage stamp, yet it hunts with a hunting success rate above 90 percent. It intercepts gnats and midges mid-flight using a basket made from its six spiky legs, closing the trap in under 30 milliseconds. Size has nothing to do with precision.
• The male's abdomen shifts from brown to blue-black as it matures — a colour change so dramatic it fooled taxonomists into thinking juveniles and adults were different species until the 1960s. That metallic sheen isn't just looks; it signals breeding readiness and dominates how rivals assess threats before dueling over territory.
• Sympecma fusca emerges from water as a nymph that's lived underwater for nearly two years, eating tadpoles and smaller insects in the murk. It spends only 4–6 weeks as a flying adult before returning to the water to breed, making its entire airborne life shorter than a school term. Most of what it is, is spent in darkness.
• Climate records show populations are shifting northward and arriving earlier each spring — moving their range northward by roughly 50 kilometres per decade over the last 40 years. Warmer winters mean longer hunting seasons and earlier breeding, rewriting the timing of an ancient life cycle in real time.
